Under the Hala captures a quiet moment of tranquility and relaxation through understated color, simple lines, and softly embossed shapes. A combination of subtle cubist forms and skillful fresco technique work in harmony to portray this tender family scene. The Honolulu-born artist Juliette May Fraser (1887 - 1983) is perhaps best known for the murals she painted around the world, from the World's Fair in San Francisco to lpapandi Chapel on Chios Island, Greece. She graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, returned to Honolulu and worked several years as an educator, like her mother and father who had come to the islands to teach. Fraser used her salary to study at the Art Students League of New York and subsequently worked in a variety of media, including printmaking, oil painting, ceramic, and fresco. Her work is in many public buildings and private collections throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
